Research mentor training–based upon the book Entering Mentoring opens in new tabhas been tested and shown to be effective in increasing mentoring knowledge, skills, and behavior. Furthermore, culturally responsive interactions between mentors and mentees can help historically underrepresented mentees successfully progress in their research careers, becoming effective mentors, scientific leaders, and research team members of the future.

Objective

Prepare participants to lead the in-person CAM workshop.

Themes and Concepts

Increased knowledge of, skills related to and self-efficacy in Culturally Responsive Facilitation (CRF) approaches, which are core to the Culturally Aware Mentoring (CAM) workshop. CRF is grounded in a racial contextual framework and requires deep self-reflection, commitment to intentionality, and cultural humility as well as using intrapersonal and interpersonal discomfort as a vehicle for professional growth.

Enhanced understanding of the underlying goals and principles of the Culturally Aware Mentoring (CAM) workshop as well as the philosophical and logistical approaches used. This includes a working understanding of how the workshop activities connect to the CAM learning objectives and what it looks like when the activities are and are not achieving the objectives

Assessment of facilitator readiness and what is needed for personal growth and development as individual CAM facilitators, and to collaborate as CAM co-facilitators in CRF.

Create a detailed plan for CAM workshop implementation including plans to address issues of participant recruitment, workshop logistics, assessment and longer-term engagement.

Participant Requirements:

  • Participation in facilitator training, such as Facilitating Entering Mentoring, or experience facilitating Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) conversations.
  • All participants need to have participated in a CAM workshop. This can be the full day in-person workshop, the six or nine-hour online workshop, or the CAM workshop provided through the HHMI Gilliam Fellowship program. If you are uncertain if the workshop you attended qualifies, please contact Stephanie House (house2@wisc.edu).
  • All participants need to apply with at least one other person who can be their co-facilitator when implementing CAM. Practice facilitation within the workshop will also be done in co-facilitation pairs. CAM has historically been led by one white-identified and one BIPOC-identified facilitator. This is not required, but please consider the identities of facilitators when choosing pairs.
  • Completion of the registration application.

DISCLAIMER: Completion of this training does not equate to endorsement by CIMER regarding your readiness nor competence to implement the CAM workshop.
